Fry came to The Times from the Daily Pilot, where she covered coastal cities, education and crime. An Orange County native, Fry started her career as an intern at the Orange County Register. The style — we’ll call it Newport Classic Assemblage — is on full display at the Gardiner when you walk from the art-filled lobby into a very cozy, very green bar on the right. The 42-year-old Cushing wanted to distill elements of his Newport summers and life at the Ledges into the Gardiner House. As a result, the hotel has the spirit of a Newport home, but doesn’t try to recreate the buttoned-down aesthetic of the Gilded Age. But the recently opened Gardiner House hotel can’t be squeezed into any tidy Newport lodging categories. The 21-room hotel, which opened last fall off busy Thames Street, is a wholly different experience. The Gardiner is a tantalizing peephole into the lives of Newport’s Illuminati and their homes’ modern-day interiors.

After the artist died at the age of 47, his friend Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney raised the funds to build the Howard Gardiner Cushing Gallery in 1919 at the Newport Art Museum. His work ranged from impressionistic portraits to fanciful chinoiserie landscapes. The one part of the hotel that’s a direct recreation of the Ledges is its sweeping lobby. The double-height space, with its black-and-white limestone and marble tile floor, is wrapped by a custom wallpaper inspired by a lush landscape mural painted by Cushing’s great-grandfather in 1905 at the Ledges.
It was here that commodore Oliver Hazard Perry was received on his victorious return from the battle of Lake Erie in 1813 and it was Bannister's Wharf that hosted the successful 1977 America’s Cup defender, Ted Turner.
